DIMENSIONS OF WORKPLACE DIGNITY AND ITS INFLUENCE ON INTENT TO QUIT OF HOTEL EMPLOYEES
Abstract
Purpose: This study aims to identify the underlying dimensions of workplace dignity and measure the influence of it on intent to quit job of the hotel employees. Design/Methodology/Approach: Data were obtained from 215 employees from 4 and 5-star hotels in India. Factor analysis was adopted to identify the dimensions of workplace dignity and its influence on intent to quit was measured by SEM. The hypotheses related to the differences among the employees regarding workplace dignity are analysed using t-tests and ANOVA. Findings: Result support the hypothesised relationship between the constructs identified in workplace dignity with that of an employee’s intent to quit job. The results suggest differences in workplace dignity based on gender and department of work; while differences in intention to quit job occur based on the employee’s job position and the department. Practical Implications: The study reveals that intent to quit is predominantly determined by workplace dignity and specifically by Recognition at Work. The differences in workplace dignity and intention to quit job based on the department of the employee can help HR managers focus on each of the departments with an applicable strategy. Originality: This study is the first to establish a workplace dignity measure of hotel industry in India and opens scope for future research. It also draws attention to the relationship of it with intent to quit and demographics of hotel employees.
